1-[4,4-Bis(3-methylthiophen-2-yl)but-3-en-1-yl]piperidine-3-carboxylic acid hydrochloride (MTBC) is a chiral compound that has been shown to have low locomotor activity in humans. The uptake of MTBC was found to be rapid and highly selective for the central nervous system. It is not metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and does not interact with other drugs. The drug is used as an antiepileptic drug for the treatment of epilepsy and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be used to treat infections, including infectious diseases caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis or influenza virus type A.
