The (2S, 3R) configuration is obtained by the reaction of Grignard reagent with an enantiomeric mixture of 2,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde. The reaction proceeds by a nucleophilic substitution of the Grignard reagent with the electron-deficient methyl ketone and subsequent elimination of water.
