Sodium chromate is an inorganic chemical that is used as a high-resistance industrial chemical. It has a neutral pH and is often used to prepare samples for electron microscopy. Sodium chromate can also be used in the treatment of wastewater and to cross-link polymers. There are reports of carcinogenic potential, although this has not been confirmed by studies. Sodium hydroxide solution reacts with sodium chromate tetrahydrate (NaCrO4·H2O) to produce sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). This reaction occurs because the NaOH partially dissociates when it comes into contact with the NaCrO4·H2O, which produces Na+ ions and OH- ions. The OH- ions react with the Na+ ions from the NaOH to produce H2O and NaOH, which then react with more Na+.
