Sodium arsenate dibasic heptahydrate is an antimicrobial agent that is used in disinfectants, topical antiseptics, and preservatives. It is a white crystalline solid with a molecular weight of 166.072 g/mol. This compound has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against HL-60 cells and inflammatory lesions in mice. The mechanism of action for this compound is not well understood but may be due to its ability to interfere with mitochondrial functions and redox potentials. Sodium arsenate dibasic heptahydrate also inhibits the enzymes benzalkonium chloride or guanine nucleotide-binding proteins, which are necessary for bacterial cell wall synthesis.
