It also has the property of increasing the mitochondrial membrane potential, which is important for energy metabolism. Lanthanum chloride has been shown to be effective in the treatment of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, and can also be used to treat oxidative injury. Lanthanum chloride has been shown to inhibit polymerase chain reactions by competitively binding to DNA, inhibiting RNA synthesis and leading to cell death. Lanthanum chloride binds to the ryanodine receptor in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, causing calcium release from this organelle and leading to muscle contractions.
