8-Bromoxanthine is an organic solvent that is used as a crystallizing agent. It binds to the x-ray absorbing molybdenum atom in the enzyme, which results in a change of the shape of the molecule. The crystal structure of 8-bromoxanthine reflects hydrogen bonding interactions between the oxygen atoms and nitrogen atoms. This compound also has a high affinity for cation channels and is an analog of adenosine. 8-Bromoxanthine reacts with cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases to inhibit their activity, leading to an increase in cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels in cells.
