Samarium(III) chloride is a nanoparticle that has been shown to have synergistic effects with other metal ions. It can be used in molecular modeling to study the interactions of light emission and energy. Samarium(III) chloride has been shown to absorb x-rays, which may be useful in analytical methods. The catalytic properties of samarium(III) chloride make it useful as an acid catalyst in the synthesis of allyl alcohols and esters. This compound is also used as a palliative treatment for cancer. Samarium(III) chloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by binding to DNA and inhibiting transcriptional activity. It also has been found to inhibit the production of prostaglandins and nitric oxide by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activities.
