3-Dehydroquinic acid-d3 is a structural analog of quinic acid that has been used to study enzyme reactions. 3-Dehydroquinic acid-d3 has been shown to be an inhibitor of the synthetase reaction, which is the first step in the shikimate pathway. The inhibition of this enzyme blocks the production of aromatic amino acids and leads to cell death. This compound also inhibits other enzymes, such as group p2 synthase and polymerase chain, leading to suppression of bacterial growth. In addition, 3-Dehydroquinic acid-d3 binds to DNA at a site different from that for quinic acid and inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis, as well as cellular lysis.
