(2E)-5-Methyl-2-(propan-2-yl)hex-2-enal is a volatile organic compound that has been identified as an environmental contaminant in wastewater. The chemical is produced by the degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are found in many common organic solvents. It is not known how (2E)-5-methyl-2-(propan-2-yl)hex-2-enal enters wastewater or what its source is. A study on the toxicology of this compound found that it had an inhibitory effect on the growth of several strains of bacteria in a model system. This could be due to its ability to act as an electron donor and inhibit bacterial respiration.
