4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)phenyl acetate is a hydrogen bond acceptor that binds to fatty acids. It is stereoselective, which means it has the same effect on molecules with the same shape but different orientation. 4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)phenyl acetate reacts with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to form carboxylate and enhancement products. This reaction product inhibits autophagy, which is the process by which cells break down and recycle their own components, and may be due to its ability to bind to mineralocorticoid receptor. This compound also has affinity for acetylcholine receptors in the brain, which may be responsible for its anticancer activity.
