It is used as a pesticide and research suggests that it may be eliminated from the environment by use of substances such as pesticides that contain chlorinated hydrocarbons. 2,2',4,5',6-Pentachlorobiphenyl has been detected in concentrations up to 100 mg/kg in river sediments. In addition, this compound has been found to inhibit the growth of myriophyllum (a type of aquatic plant) at high concentrations.
