1-Chloro-5-iodopentane is a solute that is used to synthesize peptidomimetics. It can be prepared by electrolysis of 1,1,1,2,2,3,3-hexachloro-5-(trichloromethyl)pentane in the presence of hydrogen gas. This reaction has been shown to occur through a catalytic reduction mechanism. Vibrational spectroscopy has shown that the product consists of a mixture of diastereomers with an average molecular weight of about 230 g/mol. The homologues are also stereoisomers and have different physical properties such as boiling points and densities. The compound has been found to be reactive with fatty acid radicals under radical coupling conditions to form dimethylformamide (DMF). DMF is a solvent commonly used for solid-phase synthesis and it has been found to be useful in clinical chemistry for determining the concentration of fatty acids in human serum
