It is a chiral molecule with two asymmetric carbon atoms and can be synthesized by reaction of chlorination with imidazole or Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction with hydrochloric acid. 1-(2,3-Dimethylphenyl)ethanol can also be obtained from the hydrolysis of 1,2-dimethylbenzene in the presence of alkali metal hydroxides. This compound has been used as a solvent for the production of dyes, perfumes, and other organic solvents due to its high boiling point and low toxicity.
