Lithium bromide hydrate is a phase-change material. It is used in refrigeration systems to absorb and release heat. The phase change is due to the hydrolysis of ether linkages in the crystal lattice, which can be enhanced by adding lithium chloride. Lithium bromide hydrate has a linear response over a wide range of temperatures, and can be used as an absorber for small quantities of heat. This material also has potential interactions with organic solutions and chlorine atoms in the atmosphere. Lithium bromide hydrate will react with water vapor and magnetic particles, but not with hydrochloric acid or hydrogen gas.
