Furegrelate is a prodrug that undergoes enzymatic biotransformation to its active form, furogrelate. Furogrelate is an inhibitor of angiogenesis, which is the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. Furogrelate inhibits the 2 enzymes required for the synthesis of fumarate and succinate, which are key intermediates in the biosynthesis of fatty acids. This inhibition leads to a decrease in fatty acid production and in turn, decreases formation of new blood vessels. Furogrelate also has anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in experimental cancer models.
