4-Benzyl-2,3-morpholinedione is a quaternary ammonium compound that acts as a competitive antagonist at the neurokinin NK1 receptor. It is used in research for the study of pain and inflammation. The stereocenter of 4-benzyl-2,3-morpholinedione is an asymmetric carbon atom attached to four different groups. This means that there are two possible configurations or “stereoisomers” of this compound. These stereoisomers are mirror images of each other and can be differentiated based on their optical properties. One stereoisomer rotates plane polarized light clockwise (dextrorotatory), while the other rotates light counterclockwise (levorotatory).
