It has been shown to inhibit the proteasome in a sequence specific manner and can be used as an intermediate for organic chemistry. (2S)-2-Methyl-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid is a racemic form, which means that it has both left and right handed forms. This compound is chiral, meaning that it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image. In order to make this compound, an organic chemist must use catalytic conditions to produce the desired form. The ammonium acetate acts as an isocyanide donor in this reaction.
