This binding prevents the phosphorylation of tyrosine residues in proteins, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 2-Chloro-5-methoxyquinoline has been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth by binding to the tumor suppressor protein p53, which is mutated in many cancers. It also inhibits the activity of kinases involved in the cell cycle, including cyclin D1 and cdk4, which are important for G1 phase progression. These activities may be responsible for its effects on cancer cells.
