It is an activator of the Ligand Receptor Interaction (LRI) assay, which can be used to identify ligands for many receptors. 7α,24(R/S)-Dihydroxycholesterol-d7 binds to the LRI receptor and induces conformational changes in the receptor protein that can be detected by spectroscopy. The compound has been shown to inhibit ion channels, such as nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and voltage-gated potassium channels. This inhibitor also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes.
