3-(tert-Butyl)-5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole is an aryloxy compound that is activated by hydrolysis. It has been shown to be an effective anti-ischemic agent that blocks potassium channels. This drug has been shown to have a protective effect against the symptoms of cycloalkyl poisoning and toxicity caused by sulfur compounds. 3-(tert-Butyl)-5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole activates potassium channels in the heart muscle and prevents the entry of sodium ions into the cell. It also has been shown to inhibit the activity of haloalkane dehalogenases and other enzymes that are responsible for detoxifying halogenated hydrocarbons (e.g., PCBs).
