Clindamycin palmitate hydrochloride is a water-soluble prodrug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis. It is a complex of clindamycin and palmitate, which is a fatty acid. The complex is absorbed into the bloodstream and hydrolyzed by esterases to release free clindamycin. Clindamycin palmitate hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth through binding to bacterial enzymes. It inhibits the activity of protein synthesis by blocking the ribosome's ability to bind with its tRNA, preventing the formation of peptide chains. The drug also inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which maintain DNA integrity.
