The compound contains an acetonitrile group and a nitro group. The optical rotation of the compound is -0.5 degrees, indicating that it is levorotatory. Hydrolysis of 3,4-dimethylbenzene-1,2-dicarbonitrile yields acetic acid and formaldehyde. This reaction can be catalyzed by metal ions such as copper or iron. 3,4-Dimethylbenzene-1,2-dicarbonitrile also reacts with silicon to yield polysilicon carbide.
