It has been shown to reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibit the growth of bacteria in an experimental model of infection. 3-Deazaadenosine also has clinical relevance as it can be used to treat atherosclerotic lesions and liver diseases by reducing MMP-9 activity and glomerular filtration rate, respectively. 3-Deazaadenosine binds dna at high affinity and inhibits polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity in vitro. 3-Deazaadenosine also inhibits hl-60 cells proliferation and induces significant cytotoxicity in these cells.
