Bisphenol A is a chemical compound that is used to make polycarbonates and other plastics. It is also found in some pharmaceutical drugs, such as the anti-ulcer drug cimetidine, and in many other products, including plastic water bottles, food containers, and dental sealants. Bisphenol A has been detected in human urine as well as wastewater samples. The presence of bisphenol A has been linked to adverse effects on the reproductive system in women and may be associated with breast cancer. Bisphenol A can enter the body through ingestion or skin contact. It can be metabolized by bacteria into compounds that are more toxic than the original chemical. The most common route of exposure for humans is through drinking water or from eating contaminated food.
