4-Ethyl-4-hydroxy-10-nitro-1H-pyrano[3',4':6,7]-indolizino[1,2-b]quinoline (EHNQ) is a potent antitumor agent that inhibits the growth of solid tumours by inducing apoptosis. EHNQ induces apoptosis through a caspase dependent pathway and triggers DNA damage. This drug has been shown to have potent anti-tumor activity in both bone cancer and subcutaneous tumors in mice. This compound also showed an increased antitumor response when used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs such as mitomycin C and vincristine sulfate. EHNQ has been shown to cause histological changes in the liver of animals treated with higher doses, but no such effects were observed at lower doses.
