3-Nitro-1-pyrenol is an aromatic hydrocarbon that has been used to study the metabolism of xenobiotics in rats and humans. 3-Nitro-1-pyrenol is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, and can react with NADPH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) to form a fluorescent product. This product can be used as a probe for studying drug metabolism in rat liver microsomes, human liver, and mammalian cells. 3-Nitro-1-pyrenol also reacts with bacterial enzymes such as typhimurium and nadph cytochrome p450 to produce a fluorescent product.
