Descripción:4-Chloro-5-iodo-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine is an antibacterial agent that is a synthetic analogue of the vitamin pyridoxine. It is a white, crystalline solid with a melting point of 138°C. 4-Chloro-5-iodo-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine has been shown to have activity against gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but not against gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. The drug binds to ribonucleic acid (RNA) and inhibits protein synthesis. The mechanism of action for this drug may be similar to that of pyridoxine, which inhibits the conversion of erythrocyte glutamic pyruvic transaminase to erythrocyte glutamic oxalacetic transaminase by binding to the enzyme's active site.
