The methyl group can be functionalized to form a number of products with medicinal and industrial applications. Methyl (1S,2R,3R,8S)-4-formylcubane-1-carboxylate has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis. This compound also has anti-inflammatory properties that are due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
