6-Propoxypyridine-3-carboxylic acid (6PPCA) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that has selective activity against Gram-positive bacteria. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. 6PPCA binds to the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 6PPCA has been shown to be active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), but not against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
