AM 4668 binds to allosteric sites on fatty acid synthase and prevents the formation of long-chain fatty acids, which are the hallmark of diabetes and pancreatitis. The pharmacokinetic properties of AM 4668 have been studied in rats, with a molecule half-life of 1 h and a bioavailability of 50%. It has also been shown to have antioxidant effects.
