Shizukanolide H is a dimeric sesquiterpene that has been shown to have neuroprotective activity. It activates apoptosis by binding to glutamate, which initiates the release of cytochrome c and other proteins from mitochondria. Shizukanolide H also interacts with signal pathways, such as ERK1/2 and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), and can be isolated from the natural product shizukaol, which is a traditional Japanese medicine for various ailments including neuralgia. Shizukanolide H may have potential for use in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
