Tungsten(IV) oxide is a chemical compound that has photochemical properties. It is used as a catalyst in oxidation reactions, such as the production of nitric acid from ammonium nitrate and sulfuric acid. Tungsten(IV) oxide is also used as a catalyst in polymerization reactions, such as the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Tungsten(IV) oxide can be found in hydrogenated amorphous carbon films, which are used for the insulation of electrical cables. The redox potentials for tungsten(IV) oxide are -1.66 V vs. Ag/AgCl and -0.88 V vs. SCE, which makes it an excellent oxidation catalyst.
