It acts primarily as an inhibitor of the mitochondrial ATP synthase enzyme, disrupting cellular energy production by targeting the proton pump mechanism intrinsic to mitochondrial function. This inhibitory action results from its ability to bind specifically to the Fo subunit of ATP synthase, effectively blocking proton translocation and subsequently hindering ATP synthesis.
