(S)-2,2'-Bis(bromomethyl)-1,1'-binaphthalene is an efficient method for the transformation of xylenes to fluorine-containing compounds. It is also an efficient method for the transformation of 4-hydroxycoumarin to chlorine-containing products. (S)-2,2'-Bis(bromomethyl)-1,1'-binaphthalene has been used in pharmaceutical preparations as a diluent and anticoagulant. It can also be used for the synthesis of furyl derivatives and biphenyls from chlorobenzene.
