N-(2-Carboxyethyl)-2,5-dideoxy-2,5-imino-D-mannonic acid is a hydrogen bonded compound that has a low melting point and crystallizes in the form of a five membered ring. The molecule has an unusual conformation due to the presence of two carboxylic acid moieties and two hydroxy groups. The molecule's zwitterionic nature arises from the presence of two negative charges on one side of the molecule and two positive charges on the other side. It is a weak acceptor for hydrogen bonding with an intermolecular distance of 3.4 Å and an intramolecular distance of 2.3 Å.
