4-Nitropicolinamide (NP) is an anti-coccidial agent that belongs to the class of acyl derivatives. It is a structural analogue of nicotinamide and cyanide, which inhibits the growth of coccidia by inhibiting their protein synthesis. NP has been shown to have optimal activity against tenella, with no effect on other protozoans such as Entamoeba histolytica or Giardia lamblia. 4-Nitropicolinamide is an acid chloride that can be prepared from chlorides and acid chlorides by dehydration. The drug may be hydrolyzed by carboxamides, which are enzymes found in the intestine. This process will produce nicotinamide, which inhibits the growth of coccidia through its anticoccidial effects.
