2-[1-(2-Furyl)ethylidene]malononitrile is a synthetic organometallic compound that has been used as a catalyst for the industrial production of nitrobenzene. It is also used in analytical chemistry, as it can be used to determine the metal content of various compounds. 2-[1-(2-Furyl)ethylidene]malononitrile is a cyclic molecule with an active methylene group that binds to metal ions and facilitates their removal from the solution. The compound was synthesized by reacting methylene chloride with 1,2-dichloroethane in presence of potassium carbonate and zinc dust.
