The methylation of the sugar at position 1 and position 2 on the ribose sugar produces 1,2-di (O acetyl)-3,4 C (methylsulfanyloxymethyl) -5 O methanesulfonyl D ribofuranose. This modification creates a reactive site for click chemistry or other chemical reactions. The carbons in the sugar are fluorinated to produce 1,1′ F 2 COC 6 H 4 CH 2 OH.
