It can be used as a building block to synthesize oligosaccharides or glycosylations. It has been shown that 3DG reacts with the amino group of proteins and peptides leading to the formation of methylated sugars. This compound can also be used to modify saccharides such as by converting them into click or substitution derivatives. 3DG is readily available in high purity and is stable under a variety of conditions.
