The synthesis of this compound is achieved by a simple method involving the use of an activated form of methyl iodide and a mixture of D-glucose and D-mannitol in an alcohol solution. This reaction proceeds as follows:
The compound is purified by recrystallization from ethyl acetate or by column chromatography. The purity can be confirmed using a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. 2,3:4,5-Di-O-isopropylidene-D-gulose is soluble in water, methanol and ethanol. It has been assigned CAS number 59130-27-9.
