It is a synthetic carbohydrate, and its structure is similar to that of D-mannitol. 6-Deoxy-L-altritol can be used for medical purposes as it inhibits bacterial growth and is an anti-inflammatory agent. 6-Deoxy-L-altritol has been modified with fluorine atoms to give it potent antibacterial activity against Gram negative bacteria, such as Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
