Ethyl 2-O-benzyl-b-D-thioglucopyranoside is a custom synthesis product. It is an oligosaccharide that contains a saccharide monomer unit with a carbohydrate chain containing between 3 and 10 monomer units. This product has been modified to include fluorine atoms, which confers resistance to degradation by enzymes. The product has been synthesized from ethyl 2-O-benzyl-b-D-thioglucopyranoside and 2,4,5,6-tetrafluoroethanol in the presence of sodium methoxide in methanol at 120 °C for 24 hours.
This molecule can be used as a sugar substitute and is particularly useful for people who have diabetes or are diabetic due to its low glycemic index (GI).
