Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) is a polymerization initiator that is used in the production of polymers such as polyvinyl chloride. AIBN is an aromatic hydrocarbon with a hydrocarbon group and a fatty acid side chain. It also has an alicyclic ring, making it a heterocyclic compound. This compound has a high thermal stability and is soluble in solvents such as benzene, toluene, and xylene. Azobisisobutyronitrile can be used as an acceptor molecule for conjugation reactions with styrene or acrylonitrile. AIBN can also be used as an antioxidant to protect metal surfaces from corrosion.
