Methyl 5-hydroxy-1H-indole-3-carboxylate is a potent inhibitor of cancer cell lines in the nature. It is an indole alkaloid that also has potent inhibitory activity against hepatic carcinoma cell lines in vitro. Methyl 5-hydroxy-1H-indole-3-carboxylate is found in marine sponges from the tropics and rhizomes from tropical plants. This compound has been shown to have serotonin effects, inhibiting the synthesis of this neurotransmitter. The structure of methyl 5-hydroxy-1H-indole-3-carboxylate was determined by NMR spectroscopy data.
