(R)-(-)-2-Heptyl isothiocyanate (S-2HI) is an aliphatic amine with a chiral center. It has two enantiomers that are mirror images of each other. These compounds have been shown to be active esters, although the absolute configuration is not known. The cotton effect, which refers to the coloration of wool, is due to the presence of these compounds in the wool from sheep grazing on plants containing them. Measurements of the optical spectrum and measurement of diastereomeric ratios can be used to differentiate between these two enantiomers.
