D-Galacturono-6,3-lactone has been synthesized from sodium citrate and hydrochloric acid in the presence of magnesium salt, and the product was purified by crystallization. It has also been shown to inhibit aminotransferase activity and increase locomotor activity. D-Galacturono-6,3-lactone has a ph optimum of 4.5, which can be determined by an analytical method involving the measurement of hydrogen ion concentration.
