It binds to the sulfhydryl group of cysteine, which is an amino acid that is essential for protein synthesis. 2,3-O-Isopropylidene-D-erythrofuranose has been shown to be potent in inhibiting cancer cells and has been used in the treatment of leukemia and other cancers. This drug can also be used as a means of treating lysosomal storage diseases such as Gaucher's disease.
