This compound inhibits the proliferation of cancer cell lines, including human prostate and breast cancer cells, in vitro. Methyl 3-(4-nitrophenoxy)benzoate prevents the growth of cancer cells by interfering with DNA synthesis, which is essential for the division of cells. It also inhibits the production of protein kinase C (PKC), which may be responsible for its antiproliferative activity.
