5-Benzyl-1H-imidazol-2-amine hydrochloride is an imidazole that inhibits the 14α-demethylase enzyme. It has shown activity against cryptococcus and c. neoformans, but not against other fungal species such as capsulatum. The carbonyl group in 5BZIH is a reactive functional group that can be modified to improve its properties for use in anticancer therapy or as a drug for the treatment of cryptococcal meningitis. This molecule also has toxic effects on the liver, which are due to its ability to inhibit mitochondrial function.
