It is a molecule that contains five carbon atoms, one double bond, and two hydroxyl groups. 5KDG has been found to be an effective inhibitor of gluconobacter, a type of bacteria which produces D-gluconic acid. The enzyme 5KDG dehydrogenase catalyzes the conversion of 5KDG into D-gluconate. 5KDG has been shown to have antiepileptic effects and can be used for the treatment of epilepsy.
